Your mat has been through a lot with you. The sweaty flows, the wobbly first crows, the days you couldn't be bothered but showed up anyway. It deserves a bit of looking after in return, and happily, natural rubber makes that easy, as long as you know what it actually likes.
Why natural rubber is different
Natural rubber isn't plastic pretending to be eco-friendly. It's tapped straight from rubber trees, which means it behaves more like a living material than a synthetic one. That's exactly what gives it that famous grip: the surface is porous, slightly tacky, and made to work with moisture rather than against it. It's also why the usual gym-wipe-and-go approach can do more harm than good.
Two things natural rubber does not get on with: direct sun and harsh chemicals. UV breaks down the rubber's structure over time, making it brittle and prone to cracking. And anything alcohol-based or heavily perfumed strips the natural oils that keep it supple, leaving you with a stiffer, less grippy mat than the one you started with.
The actual clean
After every practice: Wipe it down with a damp cloth. Water alone is often enough.
Weekly-ish, or after a particularly sweaty session:
1. Mix a small amount of gentle, unscented soap or lemon juice with warm water.
2. Wipe the whole surface with a soft cloth, both sides.
3. Rinse with a second cloth dampened in plain water, to lift any residue.
4. Lay it flat to dry, away from direct sunlight and radiators.
That last part matters more than people think. Rolling a damp mat away is basically inviting mildew to the party and hanging it in blazing sun is how you age it five years in one afternoon.
If you are looking for a mat that requires less maintenance, then you should look into our 4mm EverGrip Yoga Mat. It’s EverGrip Tech surface has anti-microbial properties and is non-toxic. It is a world first anti stain mat. Think ultra grip with a matte effect. No more marks. Easy to clean.
EverGrip Collection
What to skip
- Essential oils and scented cleaners (lovely on your pillow, less lovely on your grip)
- Washing machines and dishwashers, tempting as the idea is
- Baby wipes, disinfectant sprays, or anything with alcohol
- Storing it rolled up while still even slightly damp
A gentle truth
Your mat will change over time, a slightly different texture, a little more character
underfoot, and that's not a sign you're doing it wrong. It's a sign it's actually being used, by an actual person, in an actual body, on actual days that don't always go to plan. Rubber mellows. So do we.
Give it the two minutes it deserves after practice, keep it out of direct sun, and it'll keep showing up for you exactly the way you show up for it.
